Last week I posted an overview of the races for the Senate in the upcoming election cycle. This week, also produced by public affairs at Fleishman-Hillard, there is another guide – this one for state houses.
While the Congress is ripe with reforms aimed at the FDA and at pharmaceutical marketing, there is also a great deal that is occurring at the state level, particularly aimed at pharmaceutical marketing practices. The National Conference of State Legislatures reports that there are 541 pharmaceutical related bills before 41 state legislatures for 2008 and in 2007, there were 105 bills that became law. As Congress weighs reforms that are going to impact the way pharmaceuticals are marketed and tested, states will move to fill what they consider to be vacuums left in the reform efforts. Therefore, the gubernatorial and state houses are important to watch.
Out of the 50 states, 11 governors are up for election in 2008. Of these 11 races, 6 are held by Democrats and 5 are held by Republicans.
