Barr Labs announced last week that it had re-filed its application with the FDA to move Plan B contraceptives from RX to OTC.
Also last week, some in conservative ranks began to call upon the White House to withdraw the nomination of Dr. von Eschenbach because he invited this action from the drug sponsor. Withdraw a nomination because someone is finally doing the job?
If Dr. von Eschenbach wants to be the leader of the Food and Drug Administration, as the acting head he must demonstrate that he can lead. There is no better way for that to happen than by putting the Plan B issue to bed.
Approval of Plan B will go a long way to restoring some credibility to the agency by demonstrating that the agency is once again committed to evidence-based decision-making and not an agency with sails set to the latest political extremist wind.
